Herbal, tea-based popsicles make a cooling, soothing treat for when you or your loved ones are feeling feverish, designed by herbalist and nutritionist Lindsay Kluge.
When we’re in the thick of cold and flu season, it’s so helpful to keep some necessities on hand that can tide you through the toughest days of the symptoms. With fever, chills, upset tummies, lethargy, aches and pains, it can feel impulsive to take products that mask these unpleasant symptoms, but what we often neglect are some of the simple solutions that help the body deal with and fight off those bugs to actually help us recover more efficiently. This is where herbs really shine, and I love keeping some staple teas on hand to make quick hot cups of warming tea.
Chamomile Lemon Tea and Three Roots Tea serve double duty as both a warming, nourishing warm tea for when we’re sick, and also as perfect additions for these herbal fever popsicles! Especially with kids, it can be tough to get them to take medicines, so these popsicles are an ideal solution. Try the two recipes below to soothe and calm in the throes of cold and flu season.
Chamomile Lemon Popsicles
2 Chamomile Lemon Tea bags
1 teaspoon raw honey
1/2 freshly squeezed lemon
4 cups hot water
Bring 4 cups of hot water to a boil. Remove from heat and add the 2 tea bags, honey and freshly squeezed lemon. Stir to incorporate and melt in the honey. Let steep together for 10 minutes. Remove the tea bags and pour 1/2 cup of the liquid into small dixie cups or popsicle mold, if you have one. Put in the freezer for about 2.5 hours, inserting a popsicle stick about 1 hour in to the freezing time. Makes 4, 1/2 cup popsicles.
Turmeric, Ginger, Elderberry Popsicles
These turmeric, ginger, elderberry popsicles are a heating, moving and immune-supporting treat, ideal for when you’re in the midst of the seasonal cold’s and flu (and have the added bonus of being soothing on sore throats with the licorice!). Slightly sweetened with honey, you can adjust the level of sweetness by adding a bit more if desired. Taste the liquid formula before pouring it in the dixie cups and adjust the sweetness to your liking.
2 Three Roots Tea bags
1 heaping teaspoon dried elderberries
1/2 teaspoon licorice root
1 teaspoon raw honey
4 cups water
Simmer the elderberries and licorice in 4 cups water in a small pan for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and add the teabags and honey. Let steep together for an additional ten minutes. Remove the teabags and pour the liquid through a strainer, reserving the liquid and discarding the boiled herbs. Add 1/2 cup liquid to small dixie cups, or popsicle mold. Put in the freezer for about 2.5 hours, inserting a popsicle stick about 1 hour in to the freezing time. Makes 4, 1/2 cup popsicles.
