Numi Giving TEAsday

Nominate a loved one whose actions are having a positive impact on others!

We’re grateful for you, the givers who support Numi’s social mission through your purchases, donations and volunteerism. Without you, Together for H2OPE: Madagascar---an initiative that brought clean water to 4,000 Malagasy people---would not be possible, and we could not expand to India in 2017.

In the spirit of Giving Tuesday (aka Giving TEAsday!), we'd like to say THANK YOU and give back to people doing good for others in their own communities, and beyond. We invite you to nominate a loved one whose giving spirit shines bright, illuminating others. Read on for details!

How to Participate

  1. NOMINATE A CHANGE-MAKING LOVED ONE IN THE COMMENTS. Include the first name of the person you're nominating and tell us how your nominee is having a positive impact.
  2. SUBMIT YOUR NOMINATION. Log in to the nomination widget (just above the comments section), selecting “Leave a blog post comment” and clicking the “I commented” button. Then select one or more of the (optional) bonus entry options to increase your odds of winning the grand prize drawing.

Complete these two steps to be eligible for a chance to win (prize details below), then share your nomination with friends---including the nominee!

Ethos Collection Sanctuary Gift Box

Each week, the Numi Tea'm will select one nomination that resonates with us. Weekly winners receive an Ethos Collection Sanctuary Gift Box that includes Numi's Collection, a Clay Moon Candle by Zeal Living, an Infinity Scarf by Synergy Organic, a Rose and Geranium Bath Bomb by Real Beauty for a Cause, and a donation to Kiva.org.

Weekly prize winners will be announced each Tuesday (12/6, 12/13, 12/20). Weekly prize packages will be sent to both the nominee and the nominator.

I nominate one of my employees, Angela Brinegar. She is an assistant manager at Andrews University in Berrien Springs MI. When a coworker became homeless, Angela invited this young woman and her 3 children into her home. 3 months later, this single Mom and her kids are moving into a new apartment and have also been able to purchase a used car that will service their needs. All of this because someone has a huge, other centered heart and loves her neighbor as herself. I am proud to work with Angela and know that she will be blessed 10 fold!

Meena Palaniappan, creator of AtmaConnect: Meena realized that many poor people who didn’t have a lot of resources have a mobile phone! So she devised an app, which she launched in Indonesia, which residents could use to keep in touch with their own neighborhoods and communities. It was especially useful during huge floods – people could alert their neighbors to stay away from streets or areas where it was impassable or there was debris, or direct them to shelter or fresh water. Meena had also observed that most apps are used to collect information from people for use by agencies or corporations – Atma lets people use the information themselves!

She was so brave and is so wonderful and positive, made it through easier than I did! She’s a real joy to everyone who knows her, a good friend, and a great daughter. Her job in education puts her in classrooms helping an array of students, from those classified as at-risk, to those diagnosed with learning differences, to immigrant and refugee children, to those struggling in poverty. She’s an advocate for these kids, getting them the services and care they need. She sees people complexly, understanding them deeply. Outside the classroom, she participates in community gardening projects as a certified Master Gardener. These, too, are aimed to help educate kids in poverty or other difficult situations. She’s also just a generous person, contributing to holiday toy and book drives now. I look at her at see all the lives she’s touched in so many ways, as an educator, a gardener, a friend, and a mother. It really never ends with her, and so I choose her as my nominee.

I would like to nominate my brother, Elton for always being the wonderful person he is. He always goes above and beyond for people he doesn’t know. He will go out of his way to help someone. For example, one time another passenger on the bus gave this blind man wrong directions. He didn’t want to interfere in their conversation and waited until the blind man got off the bus. Then my brother got off the bus as well even when it wasn’t his stop. Then he took the bus with the man to the correct stop which was the opposite direction of thrnbusbtheybwere originally on. There are more stories like this with my brother. He will do anything he can to help our others.

There are many examples I could give but one is all the work she did to get donations and supplies to people affect by the Lake Cunty fires last year, for both people and animals! She drove a small flat bed truck, loaded with hay and supplies, over hwy 175 from Hopland to Clear Lake. If you have ever drove that twisting road (And I would recommend you don’t!) you would have to give Rachel some mad respect for doing that!! https://youtu.be/gTxNLB0oe9k Here is a video showing that road. However, I have never been inspired by any one person as much as I have been by my very own son, Kaleb Depriest. Kaleb was born fighting for his life. No matter what life has thrown his way his entire 11 years he has never let a smile leave his face. He’s always encouraging and uplifting others in his own little way. No matter how much someone has wronged hi he is always so quick to forgive. His favorite thing to do is give cuddles (his version of hugs) whether you need it or not. He gets his joy from bringing others joy. I’ve learned so much from my son. No matter what life brings for him I am forever grateful that God chose me to be his guardian.

My daughter, Desiree is the strongest person I know. She’s was born with Cerebral Palsy from a complicated mono/mono twin birth. The doctors didn’t think she would survive the pregnancy. She was born very premature and weighed 2 pounds. Then, at age 18 months, she was then diagnosed with a brain tumor and we were told that it was inoperable. Again, the doctors said for us to spend as much time with her as possible, that she wouldn’t live long. We prayed for a miracle and She ended up havong a very high risk surgery and has beat the odds yet again! She is the sweetest, most loving, caring girl that I know. The main reason I’m nominating her is that she is so giving. She always gives her own toys and clothes to neighboring family in need. It’s the most beautiful thing seeing her make other kids happy. This would be great to give her to remind her that it is important to take 10 mins out of her day for herself. SOmething as simple as a cup of tea and a few pages out of her favorite book to relax and rejuvenate her energy.

She raised 8 of us and lost 3 of her children but still has her faith in God. She always says turn all your troubles to him and he will answer, we might not like his answers for us but he only gives us what he knows we can handle to make us stronger. She is the strongest most beautiful loving person I know and I strive to be like her everyday.

I would like to nominate my mother Michelle Short. The reason i am nominating her is because no matter what life throws at us she is always smiling. My mom works 5+ jobs at the age of 48, and doesn’t blink an eye at it. She’s not only my mom, but my best friend. We did not have the best upbringing and child abuse was present due to her husband at the time. Once she divorced him and got herself back on her feet she bloomed. She found her true self, she made amends, and most of all she repaired the bond with her children. She’s not perfect, and she made mistakes, but she NEVER gave up. Now my mom and I share the best bond I could ever ask for. We may drive one another nuts, but at the end of the day she’s always there. She has shown me that she is not perfect, but it’s owning up to your wrongs that can change everything. I love you mom, and if you read this just know you are special.

Things weren’t going well with her so she was referred to University of Nebraska Med Center for the intestinal rehab program. Being in constant pain, she pretty much remained in bed. But, she taught herself to crochet. Every appointment she goes to at the med center, she brings along a bag full of crocheted animals for the kids being treated by these wonderful doctors. Though she seldom sees any of the kids receive the toys, she hears the report from the staff. Besides her own physical problems, she also is the single mom of an autistic son. She went back to school a couple years ago to pursue a Masters in Social Work and she currently works at the Infectious Disease clinic at the local hospital helping clients with HIV/AIDS understand their medical and insurance options. In light of this year’s election, a lot of clients are reasonably concerned that funding will be cut for their life saving medications. In this time of grief and confusion, Sarah has made herself available, physically through her job, but also emotionally, crying alongside her clients as they work to hope together. Lauren made the hard decision to place a child for adoption in 2013, and quickly became involved in an organization that provides support post placement for women who made the same difficult decision. She is studying to be a social worker so she can continue to help birthmoms & women pursuing adoption for their unplanned pregnancies. She runs an online support group, helps the agency host monthly meet ups, and facilitates a retreat. I’m beyond proud of her for all the hard work she does and for chasing her passions in life. I’m nominating my Dad….he’s 72 and retired….lives at the Jersey shore. After Hurricane Sandy, he joined a group that took care of the feral cats that were affected by the storm in Seaside Heights and Seaside Park. The group was compromised and dissolved because of some unethical people, and he fought to keep the organization alive. He turned it into a non-profit and it became a successful model program of TnR/Colony management. He went out every single morning…..heat, rain, snow…..at 5:30 am to tend to the cats…..feed them and make sure they were all accounted for. Unfortunately, the city got a new Mayor, who was not on board with continuing the program and the city officials wanted the cats out of town, which pointed to certain doom for the cats. My dad collaborated with an animal rescue in the area and managed to trap and relocate about 75 beach cats to a sanctuary farm where they can live out their lives happily. I knew he cared about animals and all life, but I never thought he’d go the distances he has to fight for animals the way he has.

She literally feeds, cleans, clothes, and moves those who cannot almost every day of her week. Rather than taking vacations, she goes on international service trips to offer her medical skills to the most destitute; in the past year, she has visited both West Africa and Haiti, and will return to the latter next month. I nominate my friend, Aisling! Giving to others runs deep within her DNA. As a high school student, she started two programs to help other teens get involved with volunteering. The first brought 150 teen volunteers to work with sick kids at the Nemours/Alfred I duPont hospital for children. The second enlisted middle school children to donate needed school supplies for children in Africa and Afghanistan.

Her real passion lies with the Amigos de Jesus orphanage in Honduras. Between organizing fundraisers, and multiple mission trips to help the children, she truly makes a positive impact on the world.

To some people, a mission trip is something they go on to check a box on their bucket list and then return to their regular life. To Aisling, Amigos de Jesus is a part of her life, and she definitely has left a big piece of her heart there!

She organizes fundraisers, posts pics to all social media outlets and around town, cleans, and helps out. And she has such a beautiful heart….when we ran into Santa yesterday at our local grocery store he asked her what her Christmas wish was….she immediately started sobbing and said the only thing she wanted was her brother home (he’s in the Army almost 3000 miles away and we just learned he won’t be able to make it this year). I want to nominate my close friend, Yesenia Torres. I met her this summer when we were both placed here in the same homeless shelter, Haven for Hope. I am so fortunate to call her a friend and she is now a part of my family. If it wasn’t for her, I would have given up more than once instead of continuing to do everything possible to get out of this shelter and find a home for my kids and I. She helped me when I was struggling with my anxiety and depression and helped me to bring me back to reality when I wanted to just wish everything away. I don’t know what I would have done if she had not been put into my life. I love her and her children and I wish nothing but the best for them.

My daughter, Renee Gardner, works with disabled individuals so they can live independent lives instead of having to live in nursing homes or institutions. She could go get a different job that pays more, but she likes to see the difference she makes in these individuals lives that she stays. She tries so hard to help the individuals live a full life the way they want to!

I want to nominate my husband Paul Carter, he’s been so supportive of my health issues. After being diagnosed with hashimotos he’s been there to give me encouragement, love, compassion and amazing support. We have been together almost 9 years and he’s changed my life. Given me a beautiful daughter and great life. He never complains about the changes we’ve had to make because of my health or get upset when plans change because I don’t feel well. I’m so grateful, blessed in awe of him and so in love.

I nominate the director of the cat shelter I volunteer at. This lady Ellen Q works a demanding full time job and then comes home to do another full time hobby running a cat shelter for strays and other cats and kittens that need homes. The shelter is her home away from home where she delegated responsibilities for volunteers, insures all cats are healthy, makes sure they all get spay/neutered and vaccinated, then gets them forever homes. This past year we adopted out over 460 cats/kittens and counting. I have a picture of our billboard showing the list of the hundreds of cats we helped get homes for this year. With her dedication of time and often using her own money to provide for the cats she is so very deserving of this. Thank you for your consideration…

I’m nominating my husband Eric. He is seriously the most selfless caring person I know. We have never past a homeless person on the road without him stoping to ask that person what he can do to help. He loves harder than anyone else I know and so passionate about the things that matter most to him. He deserves so much more than I can give him!

Our family is a blended one, I had 3 daughters from my first marriage, and John had 1 daughter he had custody of. We had a daughter together 2 years ago. John has shown my daughters what a man is. How he loves his wife, and respects her, how he leads a family with grace and compassion and how to work hard to provide for his family. It was the first time my 3 had even seen a man act like a man. I nominate him for this. For the way he has never tried to be their father, or force himself into their lives, but instead just being there for them. Helping them learn to fight their own battles, teaching them how to change a tire or to care for the animals on the farm. It takes a true man to raise daughters that are not his blood, like they were. We are blessed for him and by his actions, his love and compassion, he will reach so many others through the little warriors we are raising.

I nominate my mom, Guin. Despite getting injured on the job last year and as a result being unemployed for the past year; despite being sexually assaulted last year and not getting justice; despite losing both parents 3 months apart this year, she still is standing strong and helping others before herself. She has been helping others before herself for way to long. I would love to give her help for a change.

I would like to nominate the two ladies of Preemie Moms Rock! These ladies give their time to local hospital NICUs to provide parent-to-parent support and healthy food to the Moms who have babies in the NICU. They both had micro-preemies (Born weighing less than 2lbs) at the 25 week mark. It was their personal experience that lead them to start Preemie Moms Rock. The NICU nurses and doctors are WONDERFUL, but they haven’t actually gone through the experience of having a preemie. Once a month the ladies service 3 hospitals by bring in a healthy meal, healthy snacks, a fun craft and conversation. Having a preemie is something you can’t prepare for and these ladies make it a lot easier. They share their personal experiences, the highs and lows, the yummy food and fun crafts and they do it to help the Moms and Dads get through the tough times while their babies are in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Their actions and selflessness have made an overwhelmingly impact on the families that they serve. Their giving spirit shines bright and illuminates others! WE LOVE PREEMIE MOMS ROCK!

My friend Beverly has a positive impact on my life. She has helped me through so much. Physically, emotionally and even helped evacuate our animals during a massive flood in 2015 and opened her doors (and yard) to us. I can talk to her about anything and never feel judged. She is like a mother figure to me as well as a friend. I lost my mom in 1998 and having her in my life now (better late then never!) is a blessing.

🌱 Why do grades of tea matter? The larger the leaf, the greater its surface area for steeping and the more complex the infusion. Numi uses only hand-plucked, fuller leaf quality tea for a pure taste that balances depth and nuance. Many bagged teas are machine-picked and use low-quality fannings and dust. Smaller grades release tannins more quickly, leading to a dark, bitter-tasting cup. Wake up with fuller leaf teas that steep slowly and evenly, delivering a smooth, rich flavor. When you drink our tea, you’ll immediately taste the difference. ☕️ Find our Breakfast Blend and over 40 delicious organic blends on our Amazon store. Link in bio.
