When trying new skincare tricks, I’m careful about choosing ingredients that are as natural as possible. The skin is our largest organ, and while it helps protect us from harmful chemicals, it also absorbs what we smear onto it. With this green tea-powered restorative mask, you can’t get much simpler or purer—each ingredient is actually edible on its own!
Baking Soda
From Dr. Oz to beauty blogs, the virtues of baking soda have been praised for the powdery baking ingredients’ ability to brighten skin and clear breakouts.
Honey
Did you know that honey is naturally antibacterial? In ancient cultures, it was even used to preserve mummified bodies! Honey is also very moisturizing and will leave you with soft, smooth skin.
Green Tea
Anything that reduces sun damage is a great addition to your summer skincare routine! The antioxidants contained in green tea are thought to have anti-aging benefits, and the caffeine content will reduce redness and have a firming effect on the skin’s surface.
Numi Gunpowder Green Tea is great for this face mask because it is organic, and has no other residual chemicals sprayed on the tea that you’re putting on your face.
With just these three ingredients, you can “feed” your skin and give it a little TLC after enjoying fun in the sun.
If you have sensitive skin, first test the mask on a small area of skin on your arm and let it dry to ensure that it agrees with your complexion! Do not use on sunburned or broken skin.
Ingredients
1 Numi Gunpowder green tea bag
½ tsp baking soda
1-1/2 tsp raw honey
To Make
Though it isn’t necessary, I highly recommend grinding the contents of your tea bag into a fine powder. I used a mortar and pestle, but you could also use a high-powered food processor.
Mix the green tea powder and baking soda, adding honey until the mixture turns into a thick paste.
To Apply
Rinse your face and pat dry with a towel. Like most homemade masks, the mixture can be a bit messy, so use a headband to ensure that the mask doesn’t get into your hairline and apply over a sink! Let the mixture dry for 10 minutes (or 5 minutes for dry/sensitive skin), then rinse off with tepid water. For maximum skin brightening effects, gently rub your skin in small circular motions to exfoliate as you remove the mask. Once the mask has been rinsed off your face, dry your skin and apply a light lotion.
