How to Make a Tea Latte

by Numi Tea'm 54 Comments

Tea Latte

Move over, coffee. Here at Numi, we love a good tea latte. The creamy, dreamy goodness of milk with tea and other flavors can make for a soothing, healthful drink when it’s cold out.

No barista needed here: they’re easy and delicious to make at home, and can be caffeinated or caffeine-free depending on what type of tea you use.

Here’s a recipe for making a flavorful tea latte, deconstructed:

Step 1: a strong brew

How to Make a Tea Latte

The base of any tea latte is a strong brew of tea that can stand up to milk without tasting watery. Choose a strong flavored tea, and brew it with less water (usually 1/2 a cup) to brew double strength, or with two tea bags if you like a really strong latte. Remove the tea bag when you’re done.

You can also make a Turmeric Golden Latte or Matcha Latte with powder mix instead instead of bagged tea and continue following the directions below with only milk instead of water.

Step 2: a frothy milk

Choose a milk that suits you best – a dairy milk, your favorite nut milk, or a creamy coconut milk adds a flavorful touch. Heat 1/2 cup milk of your choice over the stove. You can create a luscious foam to top your latte one of two ways: use a handheld milk frother, or toss your entire latte in the blender and aerate it for a few pulses.

Step 3: choose your add-ins!

Add some extra flavor to your tea latte. For those looking for a luxurious drink, add a few drops of an extract like peppermint or vanilla, or even cocoa powder. Sweeten naturally with honey, agave, or maple syrup.

For the health nut, consider supercharging your tea latte with collagen peptides, MCT Oil, an adaptogen powder like ashwagandha or maca, functional mushrooms, or whatever else strikes your fancy. Blend the mixture to incorporate evenly.

Some of our favorite flavor combinations include:

  • Lavender London Fog: Aged Earl Grey + almond milk + lavender + vanilla + honey (optional)
  • Rooibos Cinnamon Latte: Rooibos Chai + coconut milk + cinnamon +honey (optional)
  • Almond Joy Latte: Chocolate Pu-erh + almond milk + cocoa powder + +almond extract + raw sugar (optional)
  • Turmeric Tea Latte: Turmeric tea + coconut milk + fresh grated ginger + lemon juice + maple syrup (optional)
  • Soothing Pink Latte: Chocolate Pu-erh + oatmilk + beet juice + tahini

I love making tea lattes with a maple twist!

I start with a strong black tea, like a breakfast variety. Then I add some maple syrup, frothed almond milk, and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

I am addicted to Chinese Breakfast tea I have mail ordered it for years from numi tea. Whenever I travel I take my Chinese Breakfast tea packs of Splenda and little single serve packages of cream. I find a way to heat the water and Brew the tea I add one package of Splenda and two little containers of cream the single serves and it is nirvana I get up early every morning to drink my tea latte. When I am not traveling I use half and half. I just can’t go a day without my tea latte so a woman does what she needs to do😊🍵🌺

I love making Mexican hot chocolate lattes with Numi’s Chocolate Spice tea! I steep the tea for around 5 minutes with piping hot water, and while that is steeping I begin with the milk base. First, I take 1 cup of Unsweetened Vanilla almond milk, pour it into a small mason jar, and then shake it vigorously for a minute. After this step, as I do not have access to a frother as a college student, I place the milk in the microwave until it begins to bubble up to the top. Finally, I pour the steamed, frothy milk over the Chocolate Spice tea, and sweeten with agave! This latte is very warming and comforting, and a welcome change from my morning coffees!

I love having a cup of hot tea almost every evening especially during these current chilly winter nights and my favorite one to make for myself is delicious but simple cup of Chai Latte. I seep a bag of black chai tea with some boiling water from my tea kettle for about 10 minutes, then I add hot 1/4 cup half n’ half that I spin for a few seconds with a whisk to make frothy, add 1 tablespoon maple syrup (I use organic), squirt desired amount of whipped cream on top and then sprinkle about 1/4 tsp cinnamon on top and then ta da, sip and enjoy!

    Chocolate Peppermint Tea Latte
In your favorite 12 ounce mug,
Brew two tea bags of your favorite Peppermint tea using 6 ounces of water, steeping for 5 minutes. Remove tea bags. Add 2 teaspoons of sugar and one tablespoon of your favorite dark chocolate sauce. Stir to blend well. Heat 6 ounces of your preferred milk and pour into tea, stir or froth or blend until incorporated.
Top with whip cream and garnish with a spring if mint and a drizzle of chocolate sauce.
    Enjoy with your current read.

I’ve got not only a latte recipe, but a curative one which also happens to be a bomb. It is an almond milk-ginger-turmeric latte which helps with getting rid of cold symptoms… or just cuddle up on the couch in winter, as it warms you up from the inside.

You can find it on my blog as well, together with pictures, here: https://interpretersontherun.wordpress.com/2017/12/17/golden-milk-for-two-2/

    Ingredients:

    75 ml water

    20 g dried turmeric

    400 ml almond mylk*
2 teaspoon freshly grated ginger root
    a dash of cinnamon
    2 teaspoon honey

For the turmeric paste: put the water to a boil in a small saucepan. When it starts to bubble add dried turmeric and stir. You will obtain a grainy paste in the blink of an eye. Set aside. The best thing about it is that it is good for up to a month in a jar in the fridge!

Put your saucepan back on the cooker with almond mylk. Wait for it to start boiling. Lower heat and add two teaspoons of turmeric paste, your grated ginger and cinnamon. Leave it to simmer for about 5 minutes on low, stirring occasionally.

Take out two mugs and put a teaspoon of honey in each. Add your golden milk, stir and enjoy.

    * The Court of Justice has recently ruled that no beverage can be called “milk” if it is not of animal origin – if it has not been “milked” (a ruling I absolutely agree with). So here come either almond, soy, coconut, oat juices or mylks.

This is an anti-inflammatory powerhouse and as I have learnt that dairy is to be avoided when going down with a cold, sore throat or cough, almond mylk – or coconut mylk or soybean mylk – is a good substitute. Almond mylk is also sweet, which makes up for the spiciness of both turmeric and ginger. Some recipes call for black pepper, but I find it irritates your throat, so I just do without.

    Emperor’s Chocolate Tea Latte:
To freshly boiling 6 oz of water, add 2 Emperor’s or Chocolate Pu-erh teabags and let steep for 5 minutes. Meanwhile, warm 6 oz of milk to just simmering in a large mug. Place a small hand-held whisk into the milk and briskly move your hands back and forth to foam the milk (or use a frother if you have one). To the tea, squeeze out and them remove the tea bags, then add 1/2 teaspoon cocoa through a small sieve (to aid in dissolving without lumps) and 1-2 tsp sugar or 1 packet Stevia as you like. Stir until sweetener and cocoa are dissolved, then slowly pour down the side of your mug. Relax and smile while you sip this amazing latte!

    Turmeric-Chaga Spiced Latte
2 Numi Turmeric Amber Sun tea bags & 1 tsp coarsely chopped chaga mushroom steeped at least 6 minutes in 1/2 cup of hot water. While steeping, heat 1 cup of coconut milk (or milk of choice), 1 tbsp honey & a tiny pinch of both cinnamon & cardamom on stove top until edges of the milk begin to bubble, remove from heat. Froth milk mixture using an immersion blender or milk frother. Strain tea into mug, slowly add frothed milk, sprinkle with additional spices if desired, enjoy.
If I need a little caffeine pick-me-up or want a more traditional tasting chai-latte, I switch out one of the tea bags for Numi Golden Chai.

Measure twice the amount of loose leaf tea you would normally use for one cup of tea. Use 2 tsp. Organic Makaibari Estate Green Tea for 8 oz. water. Steep the tea for 5 minutes. Heat 1/2 cup milk while tea is brewing. Add 1/4 tsp. vanilla flavoring, 2 tsp. agave syrup. Use a milk frother after milk has steamed and add to your tea. ENJOY

LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE your teas! Especially love the ROOIBOS, GREEN ROOIBOS, ROOIBOS CHAI, HONEYBUSH, TURMERIC FIELDS OF GOLD, your box of TURMERIC CHAI GOLDEN LATTE & MORROCCAN MINT!! ALL the stores though, have gone up in costs, so it has become a dear commodity for our family!

One of my fave morning drinks is:

    TURMERIC GOLDEN MILK: 2 servings

When I cannot find your TURMERIC CHAI GOLDEN LATTE MIX, I use the TURMERIC FIELDS OF GOLD TEA BAGs in half to 2/3 cup boiled water in each cup.
Make sure you let it steep well for at least 5 minutes.
While it is steeping I warm 1/2 cup of my fave coconut creamer or coconut almond milk and then froth it.
After tea has steeped, I then add 1/2 tsp of maple syrup, but you can use agave or orange blossom honey to taste.
I also sometimes add a dash of nutmeg and dash of cinnamon to the latte foam.
Then spoon the frothed milk/cream over your tea. Top with a dash of cinnamon and enjoy!

I have two to share. My first one is Rooibos steeped for about 8-10 mins. Next you add your organic turmeric powder 1/2 teaspoon, a crank of fresh ground black pepper for better nutritional absorption of turmeric. A tablespoon of local honey or maple syrup. 1-2 tablespoons of coconut cream. Then a few dashes of cayenne pepper. For added nutritional bonus add a scoop of collagen peptides. Optional

My next one is Matcha. First I make a fresh cashew milk. A dash of vanilla and maple syrup to taste. Add matcha. Next blend in a high speed blender until well combined. Pure heaven in a mug!!

Then bring about two cups of water to a boil and add 1-1/2 cups of the water into my mug and then let the tea bag steep. Once done steeping I usually add 1 tbsp of brown sugar or agave nectar while still hot to dissolve. Next I warm a cup of unsweetened almond milk and whisk to create foam. I separate the foam from the milk and add the milk to the tea and top it with the foam. Lastly I enjoy my favorite latte 😁

    Tumeric Chai
1 cup milk (I used coconut “milk”)
    1/2 bar of dark chocolate (I used Theo’s 85 % dark chocolate)
    cinnamon, clove, ginger to taste
a touch of black pepper & cayenne!

I brew the tea while melting the dark chocolate in a double boiler. (My double boiler is in storage so I put a small stainless steel bowl over a pan of water).

When the chocolate is melted I slowly incorporate the milk & then the brewed tea.

Add spices to taste & viola! So delicious!

Maybe most people would consider it boring, but my favorite tea is plain Assam. I don’t need maple or pumpkin spice masking the natural flavor of Assam, malty almost like molasses and peat smoked whiskey with bitterness instead of sourness balancing and contrasting the sweet. Add whole milk from cows on green pasture, and I’m very happy.

That’s not to say Assam *can’t* stand up to flavoring. Sometimes I make a faux chai with a star anise, a bit of cinnamon, a few peppercorns, ginger if I’ve got it, and cardamom if I’ve got it which is rarely. I add these spices first because I think they need longer to steep than the tea. It’s cheaper than a carton and more flavorful than bags. Cow milk or coconut milk and sugar or honey work equally well. Sugar brings out the maltiness, and honey adds another flavor.

An unusual tea for a latte that I think works very well is Darjeeling and coconut milk. The fatty richness and floral lightness somehow don’t cancel each other out. It’s probably a barbaric thing to do to Darjeeling, but? The lady who owns the tea shop I used to go to before we moved said that good tea has medicinal qualities that help heal the body, but adding milk and sweetness heals the soul.

I use a spice mix in any tea that isn’t floral or already flavored. I make up a mix of 1 tsp ginger, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1 tsp allspice , 1/4 tsp clove, 1/2 tsp cardamon. I make hot tea and add a couple shakes of the spices, make hot milk in the microwave and beat it with my egg beater, and add stevia. I started this around Thanksgiving, and haven’t been able to stop. It is really good. It is good for company, too.

My Latte creation is called Honey Bunch Latte. I start with 1/2 cup of water and add 3 Numi Organic Honeybush Tea bags. The reason for using 3 bags is that honeybush is somewhat delicate and I want to make sure the flavor comes through strong. I then add 1/2 cup of steamed Almond milk to give it a creamy, frothy taste. Finally I add 1 teaspoon of raw organic honey, 1/2 teaspoon of organic vanilla, and 2 organic cardamon pods to taste. The vanilla and honey compliment Honeybush’s sweet notes, while the cardamon adds a hint of warmth and spice. The end result is sweet and not too heavy. The tea is delicate but still creates the most delicious, cozy, soothing latte. It’s my favorite to sip while reading a good book!

    Take tea latte

Contains two wonders of nature ( ok, three if you count the best Earl Grey tea out there 😜 ) Shiitake mushroom powder, packed with essential amino acids, according to experts among many other benefits supports heart, fights with bacteria, promotes skin health and supports immune system! The other one is Cinnamon and apart from the great taste it’s loaded with antioxidants, it’s anti inflammatory, benefits skin and heart and boosts the immune system!

Now combine these two with Numi’s Aged Earl Grey tea and you have something amazing! ☕️🌱💥

    Ingredients:

Numi Aged Earl Grey tea – 2 bags

Plant based milk ( oat or almond foams quite nicely but you can use any type )- 150ml

1 tsp of brown sugar (optional)

1/2 tsp of Cinnamon ( preferably organic )

1/2 tsp of Shiitake mushroom powder

    Method:

Steep the tea bags in 150ml boiling water for around 3 minutes. In the meantime heat the milk then pour it to the glass and froth immediately using a frother until a thick foam forms. Add the spices and sugar to your brew ensuring that it’s dissolved. Pour the tea to your milk creating the two layers effect. Decorate with a tiny bit of brown sugar, enjoy!

Adding mushrooms to your tea may sound like a crazy idea but just think of the benefits of it and trust me, it goes pretty well with Cinnamon and adds an interesting umami element, hope you will like it!

I have not made a true tea latte, and I would not use my recipe. Here is what I have tried (though it still needs a lot of work):

    8oz water
    1 tea bag (breakfast tea)

    3 Tablespoons of Cocoa Powder
    1 teaspoon of raw honey
    1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract
half of 1/8 teaspoon of Stevia (So that would be 1/16 teaspoon?)
    Almond Milk (as desired)

Boil the water. Pour into mug and steep the teabag for 3-5 minutes. Remove tea bag.
Add honey, vanilla, stevia, and cocoa powder and stir ingredients. Then add milk.

I wish it taste better than it does.

Hey, I never try to make an iced matcha latte with coconut milk. Love this recipe. And I think I am going for this.

I keep my tea lattes super simple. I choose a tea (usually matcha or chai) and make it like a regular cup of tea. Once it’s been steeped, I add a splash of milk and froth with a handheld frother. I sometimes add a little bit of honey or cinnamon!

🌱 Why do grades of tea matter? The larger the leaf, the greater its surface area for steeping and the more complex the infusion. Numi uses only hand-plucked, fuller leaf quality tea for a pure taste that balances depth and nuance. Many bagged teas are machine-picked and use low-quality fannings and dust. Smaller grades release tannins more quickly, leading to a dark, bitter-tasting cup. Wake up with fuller leaf teas that steep slowly and evenly, delivering a smooth, rich flavor. When you drink our tea, you’ll immediately taste the difference. ☕️ Find our Breakfast Blend and over 40 delicious organic blends on our Amazon store. Link in bio.
